Former University of New Mexico standout Danny Granger of the Indiana Pacers has been named the winner of the 2008-09 NBA Most Improved Player Award presented by Kia Motors, the NBA announced today. The annual award is presented to a player who has made a significant improvement from the previous season. Granger, who was also an NBA All-Star this season, led the Lobos to the 2005 NCAA Tournament and was named All-America by Basketball Times. In his senior season, Granger was the only player in NCAA Div. I to average at least 18 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals and 2 assists a game.
For the second consecutive year, the University of New Mexico men's basketball program will be represented in the Slam Dunk contest that tips off festivities for the Final Four. Tony Danridge and seven other collegiate seniors will demonstrate their best dunks in the 21st State Farm College Slam Dunk Championships Thursday at the Palace of Auburn Hills outside Detroit. ESPN will televise the competition starting at 7 p.m. Mountain Time. Former Lobo J.R. Giddens competed last year, but did not make the finals.

Danridge, a 6-5 wing from San Bernardino, Calif., will be joined by Charlie Coley III (Charlotte), Micah Downs (Gonzaga), Terry Evans (UW-Green Bay), Tyrone Kent (Toledo), Wesley Matthews (Marquette), Jeremy Pargo (Gonzaga) and Jermaine Taylor (Central Florida).
Danridge finished his career 16th all-time at UNM with 1,260 points.
