There were a string of moments when they could have taken command of Game2 of the Western Conference finals, seizing control of both the game and the series.
Again and again, they failed to make the plays when it counted most.
In the end, the Lakers lost their tenuous hold on the game and the series. The Denver Nuggets fought back to rip both from their hands, taking a 106-103 victory Thursday night at Staples Center that tied the series at one win apiece.
As in Game 1, the teams went at each other in a compelling test of wills down the stretch. The Lakers made all the plays in crunch time Tuesday night, and the Nuggets were
left to wonder, "what if," for the next 48 hours.
This time, the Nuggets seized the moments late in the game, making the most of their opportunities. The Lakers were left to ponder what went wrong after they built a double-digit lead in the first half but failed to maintain it during the second.
"Well, not quite the same game, but almost," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "Different ending - but that was a pretty evenly matched contest."
The best-of-7 series shifts to Denver's Pepsi Center for Game 3 on Saturday and Game 4 on Monday. Game 5, which is now necessary after the teams split the first two games, will be played Wednesday at Staples Center.
"They play at a different level on their home court and we're going
to have to be prepared for that," Jackson said of the Nuggets. "They've show us that they've been able to come to our court and play us tit-for-tat.""
