"Kobe Bryant had the ball and the game in his hands as the final seconds ticked down Tuesday night at Staples Center. He had just leaped to pluck the ball out of midair, keeping it from a pack of Denver Nuggets surrounding him. Bryant then took a couple dribbles, finding an opening along the sideline near the Lakers' bench. Instead of waiting for trouble to find him, he heaved the ball the length of the court as the buzzer sounded and Staples Center erupted in celebration. The Lakers reached out and ripped a victory from the Nuggets' hands down the stretch, rallying energetically for a 105-103 victory in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals in front of a joyful sellout crowd of 18,997. ..."
